Jason was born in London in 1964. He read History at Trinity, Cambridge. In 1989 he won The Spectator/Sunday Telegraph Young Writer of the Year. His first book, A Time for Tea (aka The Gunpowder Gardens): Travels in China and India in Search of Tea, was published in 1992 and shortlisted for the Thomas Cook Travel Book Award. He later set about exploring the history of the Ottoman Empire in Lords of the Horizons, a New York Times Notable Book. His debut thriller, The Janissary Tree, was an international bestseller and won the Edgar Award for Best Novel in 2007.
